It’s all over when the fat lady sings

I survived! Don’t worry, the lack of posting was an over-tired issue, not anything horrible.

So.  The last eight weeks.  The plan for a new teacher to come in and take over and for me to sit and watch didn’t exactly happen: he came, he taught… and for five weeks out of eight, I taught too.  Yes, I could have just had three weeks off, why couldn’t they have seen it that way? Ch-ch-ch-changes

You know what they say, be careful what you wish for.  Luckily I wasn’t fired like I was worried I was going to be, but there was a sudden shift in what I’m doing.  (Or rather, I was left to worry for a week and then it felt like the decision was made quickly.) Continue reading →

Drama Llama Llama Drama

The reason I don’t update often is because my life is currently as follows: ‘teach, prepare to teach, get some sleep, teach…’ then at the weekend ‘get up and distribute breakfasts, prepare to teach, get some sleep.’

At the risk of sounding whiny, should this not be enough? It takes up the whole day, I need a short nap when I get home so I can continue without falling asleep later, and I’ve had little downtime since I started a month ago.

Turns out, it isn’t. Continue reading →

Another… week… gone?

They say time flies when you’re having fun.  Or when your life is a neverending cycle of teaching, getting ready to teach, and fighting to get more than five hours’ sleep with zero time for anything else.

I haven’t even had a proper weekend yet – despite the three-day one last week – and I don’t just mean because of  planning.  Extracurricular tasks involve meeting and looking after the students staying in the house opposite me… fine when they’re agreeable, not so much when you have someone who was mis-sold both the house itself and her rooming situation.

But it’s good to be thrown in at the deep end.  Good experience.  Keeps you busy.  … Right? Continue reading →

When you assume…

Well, you know what they say.  Basically, don’t.

I exaggerate, as today wasn’t a disaster, but I had gone ahead and assumed – and prepared for – X number of students, expecting two to be missing like they usually are, and I ended up with Y number instead.  Which meant a slight running off to photocopy panic. Continue reading →

Sorry, The Dog Ate My Homework

Oh dear.  Doing this every day didn’t exactly work out, did it? Let’s see… highlights… bailing adults, bratty kids and demanding students about covers it. Continue reading →

The Futility of Making Plans

Okay, so that’s a little melodramatic.  To be fair, if I’d made more plans I’d be fine: I made the mistake of assuming they’d be at a certain level and only preparing for that (in my defence, the teacher helping me out didn’t exactly warn me not to.)

And let’s not forget the things you hear about teachers – their workday doesn’t end at 3pm just because the school closes.  You hear about late nights marking or preparing lesson plans, and that’s what I’m already getting to experience – at least this week where I’ve fallen into a loop where I need to keep preparing for the next day.

Then there’s the unpredictability of what’s going to be changed.  No sooner did I realize last night that I could use my old plans after all by modifying them than I was told I’m going to spend tomorrow – and potentially Friday – focusing on the little kids.  That’ll take more than modification.  Sigh.
